Benefits of Reformer Pilates

Would you like to improve your strength and flexibility, while toning up and working towards your ideal weight? Reformer Pilates at Best Body.

The reformer mechanism has been purpose built to challenge your body in safe and low impact ways. It’s made up of a rolling carriage that’s held in place by adjustable springs to create resistance. The spring-loaded tension has a similar effect on the body to gravity and allows you to build strength by pushing or pulling against the resistance of the springs.

On the reformer, you’ll perform a range of movements using the muscles in your arms, legs, torso, glutes and back. Each of these exercises is designed to target parts of your body that you normally would not use in everyday life. The key to using the reformer is to maintain control of your body and the rolling carriage. You will instinctively start to use your core muscles to be able to control your movement and the reformer.

During a Reformer Pilates class, you’ll practice movements that will lengthen your body and retrain your muscles. While yoga primarily focuses on different positions that overstretch your body, Reformer Pilates gently extends your muscles to allow you to reach your full range of movement. By consistently undertaking Reformer Pilates, you can improve your flexibility and reduce muscle and joint stiffness.

These days it’s all too easy to become sedentary and lead a lifestyle that involves long periods of remaining in a seated position. Reformer Pilates actively reverses the negative impact of a sedentary lifestyle. It strengthens the deep supportive muscles of the entire spine and teaches the body to return to its natural alignment. After 12 weeks of regular Reformer Pilates classes, you’ll start to notice an improvement in your posture, and after 6 months, your back and neck issues will begin to resolve themselves, allowing you to get back to living your best life.

Much like eating a balanced diet filled with a variety of healthy foods, Reformer Pilates provides a balanced workout with a range of movements that strengthen, tone and stretch your body. Even though it may seem relatively slow moving in comparison to high intensity exercise regimes, Reformer Pilates still provides a cardio component.

By using reformer accessories such as the jump board, you will be able to perform exercises that will help you work up a sweat and increase your heart rate. At Best Body, our instructors know how to combine various movements to ensure you gain all the benefits of Reformer Pilates, helping you to slim down and lose weight over time.

Reformer Pilates requires a lot of concentration. Similar to tapping your head and rubbing your tummy at the same time, the exercises require coordinating different parts of your body to create a seamless movement on the reformer. At times, you may also integrate various accessories into a routine of repeated movements, encouraging you to think even more about your body and its actions. In doing so, you will get to know your own body and learn that you are capable of much more than you thought, improving your confidence and self-esteem.

While using the reformer, your mind will become so preoccupied that you will be unable to think about anything else. Each movement requires complete control of your body as well as your breathing. By placing your attention on inhaling and exhaling with each exercise, you’ll be able to centre and calm your mind. After a long and stressful day, Reformer Pilates is the perfect way to wind down, or if you have a challenging day ahead, Reformer Pilates could be exactly what you need to kick start your morning and feel good all day long.

As with most things in life, the more you do it, the more you’ll be able to feel the benefits. Even if you are only able to commit to two Reformer Pilates classes per week, you will still make progress at a gradual rate. At one class per week, you’ll be able to maintain your body in its current state.
