Interpreting Perth CrossFit Lingo

When United States Vice Presidential candidate posed in gym-boy mode, detractors snarked, “The next thing you know, he’ll be bragging about his latest WOD.” CrossFitters understood. Everyone else scratched their heads.  Many new forms of exercise eventually earn a pair of shoes suited to the activity. Some, like aerobics, get their own form of competition, while others, like step aerobics, get an activity specific lingo. CrossFit has the Reebok CrossFit shoe, the CrossFit Games, and a lingo that only those cool enough to practice the sport understand. The next time you want to impress the opposite sex at a bar, throw around some of these terms. The person to whom you are speaking might ask to see your muscles!


WOD stands for Workout Of the Day. On any given day of the week, CrossFit devotees for all corners of the globe visit to see what kind of workout the Gods of Crossfit have posted for them. After completing the workout, the faithful, armed with mobile apps, journals, and tracking software, post their results online. Competitors compete for scores, which indicate how many reps you performed during your WOD, and for time, which is how long it took you to complete the workout. Comparing your WOD score to those of other Crossfitters is all part of the game.

The Box

When the dude at the bar asks if you want to come over to his box, he is not inviting you to do the nasty. The Box is CrossFit lingo for a CrossFit Gym, fully equipped with kettlebells, medicine balls and other CrossFit specific types of equipment. If you want chrome and mirrors, go elsewhere, and no, there are no spa services.

Ass to Grass

When your CrossFit trainer yells “Ass to Grass!” your squat is not low enough. Get your butt down toward your heels and do it now!

Crossfit Total

During the Crossfit Total, athletes have three attempts to determine the maximum weight they can lift during the dead lift, the standing press and the back squat.

Filthy Fifty

Performed for time, this ultra challenging workout consists of 50 Box Jumps, 50 Jumping Pull-ups, 50 Kettlebell Swings 50 Walking Lunges, 50 Knees to Elbows, 50 Push Presses, 50 Back Extensions, 50 Wallballs, 50 Burpees and 50 Double Unders.

Hero WOD

The Crossfit Hero WOD’s are ultra challenging workouts that were named after police officers, firefighters and military servicemen who have died in the line of duty.


“How many reps, coach?”  “As many reps as possible”  Lasting anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes, AMRAP workouts require you to perform as many repetitions as you can in the given time frame. The AMRAP provides the ultimate endurance workout. Taken too far, however, an AMRAP workout might trigger a visit from Pukey the Clown.

Pukey the Clown

When Pukie the Clown arrives on the scene, it’s time to worship the porcelain God. Puking is a source of pride in the CrossFit system. You might even earn an “I met Pukey” tee-shirt. Seriously speaking,

endurance training is good, but not at the expense of your digestive system. Your really don’t want to meet Uncle Rhabdo, Pukey’s buddy.

Uncle Rhabdo

Uncle Rhabdo is another CrossFit mascot. Represented by a clown, it stands for rhabdomyolysis, whih is the breakdown of your muscle fibers. Eventually, said muscle fiber content releases into the kidneys and causes kidney damage. Rhabdomyolysis results from consistently pushing a little too fart during your CrossFit workouts.
